Group seminar on fluid-structure interaction

Summer 2016 at TU Munich

♦Time, place, and information:

♦Lecture notes of the underlying lecture:

♦Contents:

  • Basic concepts in continuum mechanics
  • Modeling of fluid flows and solid mechanics
  • FSI-modeling: coupling techniques of fluids and solids, transformations between Eulerian and Lagrangian coordinate systems
  • Discretization: Time, space (FEM), nonlinear and linear solvers
  • Sensitivity analysis for FSI: a posteriori error estimation, gradient-based optimization (if time permits)

♦Prerequisites:

  • Basic Lectures on Analysis and Linear Algebra (required)
  • Introduction to Numerical Mathematics (required)
  • Numerical methods for ordinary differential (ODE) equations (would be best)
  • Numerical methods for partial differential (PDE) equations (would be best)
  • Functional analysis (would be helpful; but not mandatory)
  • Concepts of continuum mechanics (if possible)

♦Literature:

  • Continuum mechanics: G.A. Holzapfel, Nonlinear solid mechanics; Wiley 2000
  • Numerical methods for differential equations: Numerical treatment of partial differential equations by Ch. Grossmann, H.-G. Roos, M. Stynes
  • Numerical methods for fluid and solid mechanics: Numerische Mathematik 3 Numerische Methoden für Probleme der Kontinuumsmechanik by R. Rannacher (in german)
  • Numerische Methoden in der Stroemungsmechanik, Universität Heidelberg, 2014 by T. Richter (in german)
  • Lecture notes to this class from myself, T. Wick
